Support Calculator FAQ

Alberta child & spousal support — common questions

Plain-language answers about how this Alberta support calculator works, what it covers, and when to consult a Calgary family lawyer.

How is child support calculated in Alberta in 2026?+

In Alberta, child support is calculated using the Federal Child Support Guidelines and the Alberta column of the Schedule I tables. The payor's Guideline income (usually line 15000 of the most recent T1, adjusted under sections 17–19 for self-employment or corporate income) is matched to the number of children to produce the monthly table amount. Shared parenting (40%+ time) uses the set-off approach under section 9, and section 7 special expenses (childcare, health, post-secondary) are shared in proportion to income.

How accurate is this Alberta child and spousal support calculator?+

This calculator uses the 2025 Department of Justice Schedule I tables for Alberta child support and the Spousal Support Advisory Guidelines (SSAG) With-Child and Without-Child formulas for spousal support. Results match the official federal Child Support Table Look-up and DivorceMate-style SSAG ranges to the dollar for ordinary income scenarios. Complex Guideline income (self-employment, corporate pre-tax income, undue hardship, split custody, high-income above $150,000) should be confirmed with a Calgary family lawyer.

What is the SSAG and how does it calculate spousal support?+

The Spousal Support Advisory Guidelines (SSAG) are the standard Canadian framework for spousal support amount and duration. The Without-Child formula uses 1.5–2% of the gross income difference per year of cohabitation (capped at 50%); the With-Child formula uses net incomes and child support payable to produce a low–mid–high monthly range. Duration ranges from 0.5–1 year per year of cohabitation, with indefinite support after long marriages (20+ years or the Rule of 65).

Do I include self-employment or corporate income in support calculations?+

Yes. Sections 17–19 of the Federal Child Support Guidelines require Guideline income to reflect the payor's true earning capacity. For self-employed payors, we add back personal expenses run through the business (vehicle, meals, home office). For owner-operators of corporations, pre-tax corporate income and shareholder loans can be attributed under section 18. Enter your true Guideline income — not just T4 or T1 line 15000 — for an accurate Alberta support figure.

How is shared parenting (40/60) support different in Alberta?+

When each parent has the child at least 40% of the time, section 9 of the Federal Child Support Guidelines applies. The starting point is the set-off — each parent's table amount is calculated and the higher payor pays the difference — but the court can adjust for the increased costs of shared parenting and each household's standard of living. This calculator computes the set-off automatically when you select Shared parenting.

Can I save my Alberta support calculations and share them with my lawyer?+

Yes. Every scenario you run is saved to the History tab in your browser and can be reloaded later, exported to PDF, or emailed to your Stokes Law Family lawyer for review. Nothing is sent to a server — all calculations and saved scenarios stay on your device, so your financial details remain private.

Is this calculator a substitute for a Calgary family lawyer?+

No. This Alberta support calculator is an educational tool that produces accurate guideline figures for typical cases, but it does not constitute legal advice. Issues like undue hardship, imputed income, retroactive support, variation applications, coercive control, and corporate asset division require a licensed Alberta family lawyer. Stokes Law Family offers a free 30-minute consultation to review your numbers.

What income year should I use for Alberta support in 2026?+

Use Guideline income from the most recent completed tax year — for support reviews in 2026, that is usually 2025 line 15000 income, adjusted for any non-recurring items. For variation applications mid-year, courts often use a current-year estimate based on year-to-date pay stubs or self-employment records. The Federal Child Support Tables themselves were last updated November 22, 2017, and remain in force for 2026.

How do Cunningham v Seveny and Sweezey v Sweezey affect self-employment income for support?+

Cunningham v Seveny, 2017 ABCA 4, is the leading Alberta Court of Appeal authority on s. 18 of the Federal Child Support Guidelines: pre-tax corporate income of a controlled corporation is presumptively attributed to the shareholder-payor as Guideline income unless the payor proves the retained earnings are reasonably required for the business. Sweezey v Sweezey, 2016 ABQB 131, applies s. 19 to add back personal benefits paid through the corporation — vehicles, meals, travel, home office, salaries to family members. If you are self-employed or own a corporation, enter your Cunningham/Sweezey-adjusted Guideline income (line 15000 plus retained pre-tax corporate income, plus s. 19 add-backs) rather than just your T1 line 15000 to get an accurate Alberta child and spousal support number.

How are parenting matters and parenting time factored into support?+

Parenting time directly drives the support calculation. Under s. 9 of the Federal Child Support Guidelines, once each parent has the child at least 40% of the time the table set-off applies and the court can adjust for shared-parenting costs. Split parenting (each parent has primary care of at least one child) uses s. 8 — each parent pays the table amount for the children in the other's care and the difference is paid. Spousal support under the SSAG With-Child formula also moves with parenting time because it relies on each parent's net disposable income after child support. Select the correct parenting arrangement in the calculator to reflect your parenting plan.

Does the Family Focused Protocol in the Alberta Court of King's Bench change how I should use this calculator?+

Yes — the Family Focused Protocol of the Alberta Court of King's Bench requires meaningful financial disclosure and a realistic support position before the first Early Intervention Case Conference (EICC) or Judicial Dispute Resolution (JDR). Bringing a printed PDF of your calculator scenarios — table child support, SSAG low–mid–high spousal range, and any Cunningham/Sweezey Guideline-income adjustments — lets the case management justice triage interim support quickly and is often enough to settle interim parenting and support on consent.

Can this calculator be used to prepare for family law mediation?+

Yes. Mediation — private mediation, Alberta Justice's Family Mediation Program, or judicial mediation through JDR — works best when both parties arrive with the same numbers. Run the calculator for each realistic parenting scenario (primary, shared 40/60, 50/50), export the PDF, and bring it to mediation. The mediator can then focus on parenting, property, and trade-offs rather than fighting about the support figure. Final mediated agreements should still be reviewed by a Calgary family lawyer through Independent Legal Advice before signing.
